The state has appealed Criminal Court’s decision to acquit former Chief of Defense Force Ahmed Shiyam of charges of abusing his official position.

Ahmed Shiyam, who served as Chief of Defence Force during former President Abdulla Yameen's administration, was accused of misusing his position by housing his father in an MNDF VIP building and assigning an MNDF officer to manage his affairs. However, the Criminal Court ruled last year that Shiyam was not guilty of the charges.

The Prosecutor General’s Office filed an appeal in the High Court late last month. The court has yet to decide whether to accept the case.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) initially investigated the matter and forwarded it to the Prosecutor General’s Office in 2020 at the directive of the then Prosecutor General.

However, the ACC had previously determined that there was insufficient evidence to prosecute Shiyam.
