Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has launched an investigation into the death of Zakiyya Moosa, who was found dead with injuries in Noonu atoll Holhudhoo on September 10 last year.

HRCM in a post on X said that it is reviewing concerns raised by Zakiyya’s relatives and assessing the actions taken by relevant authorities in the case.

The commission has obtained case-related information and documents from the police.

Five months after her death, no arrests have been made, fueling ongoing protests on the island. Last night, demonstrators entered the Holhudhoo police station, demanding the arrest of Zakiyya’s husband and three other family members.

In December, Police Chief Inspector Mohamed Samih stated that Zakiyya’s cause of death was injuries to her neck, including multiple deep wounds.

However, he said that no evidence suggests the injuries were inflicted by another person.

Last month, police said that they had sought assistance from the FBI for the case. The agency has previously assisted in several high profile investigations in Maldives in the past as well.
