According to surgery numbers released by the ministry yesterday, a total of 40,325 operations were performed in 2022 and 2023. This includes 19,732 surgeries in 2022 and 20,593 surgeries in 2023.
The data shows that 8,808 major surgeries were performed in 2022, involving 3,116 men and 5,692 women. Of these, 3,434 surgeries were related to pregnancy and gynecological conditions, with 694 minor operations in this specialty.
According to the statistics, 5,699 men and 3,929 women underwent minor surgeries.
Orthopedic surgery was the second most common major surgery that year, with 1,929 cases. There were 946 minor surgeries in this category.
General surgery procedures ranked third among major operations. This category saw 1,815 major surgeries and 4,629 minor operations.
Ministry statistics show that 16,089 operations were performed in Male' in 2022. HDh. Atoll ranked second with 818 patients, followed by Addu Atoll with 718 patients.
76 percent of all surgeries that year were performed in tertiary hospitals. Outside the Male' region, a total of 2,925 surgeries were performed, including 1,500 minor and 1,425 major surgeries.
87 percent of neurosurgeries were performed in private hospitals. 95 percent of cardiac operations were done in government hospitals. During this period, people aged 35-64 years had the most surgeries, totaling 7,569 patients.
According to Health Ministry statistics, cardiac surgery was the most common procedure among men, with 1,791 cases.
In 2023, women again underwent more major surgeries. That year, 6,601 women and 3,935 men had various major surgeries. Minor surgeries were performed on 6,366 men and 3,691 women.
