Suspect in hammer attack near IGMH arrested upon arrival to Maldives

Police had issued an arrest warrant for him, and although he initially fled to Malaysia, he was stopped from entering the country. Authorities took steps to bring him back to Maldives, where he was placed under arrest this morning.

A man who fled to Malaysia after attacking another man with a hammer near IGMH has been arrested upon his return to Maldives.

Hussain Areesh, 31, a member of a gang operating in Maafannu, was taken into custody at Velana International Airport.

Areesh, who has a criminal history, was identified by the police as a key figure in several serious crimes in Male'.

Police had issued an arrest warrant for him, and although he initially fled to Malaysia, he was stopped from entering the country. Authorities took steps to bring him back to Maldives, where he was placed under arrest this morning.

On the night of February 4, when Areesh and another individual attacked a man near IGMH. The victim was struck on the head with a hammer by the person sitting behind the motorcycle the attackers were riding.

A police officer near IGMH responded immediately, but the attackers managed to flee. They initially attempted to escape on their motorcycle, but when it failed to start, they fled on foot.

The man who was injured in the attack was taken to IMGH for treatment.
