President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has proposed measures to reduce the operational expenses of local councils.
Speaking to residents of Gaafu Dhaalu Fiyoree during his tour of Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls, the President highlighted the need for structural changes to cut state expenditure.
He said that some individuals had raised concerns that such reforms could reduce the number of councilors and compromise democratic representation but proposed a solution to address these issues.
President Muizzu suggested that council presidents and vice-presidents be elected as full-time positions while the remaining councilors would receive allowances based on their participation in council meetings. This change would also apply to city councils and women’s development committees. Discussions with relevant authorities are underway, and these measures are expected to be implemented following deliberations, he said.
The President highlighted that the current system, which employs more full-time councilors than necessary relative to the population of many islands, is unsustainable.
“This approach would ensure democratic representation while significantly reducing costs. Many developed countries follow similar practices,” he said.
