According the to the amendment, basic utilities and internet services must be uniform across the customer's building.
An amendment has been proposed to the parliament requiring the provision of water, electricity, sewerage and internet services at the same rate and speed to all parts of households and buildings.
The amendment is proposed to be added to the Consumer Protection Act by north Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim.
According to the proposed changes, water, electricity, sewerage and internet service providers are required to provide services to a household at the same rate, efficiency and speed.
Private, public and state-owned companies will also not be exempt from this.
The amendment states that once water, electricity, sewerage and internet services are connected to a household, it is the responsibility of the service provider to ensure that all rooms, bathrooms and all corners of the household have uniform access to the service.
No additional fees should be charged for this, the amendment also dictates.
If the service provider violates this provision, the proposed amendment also provides for the possibility of filing a case in the judicial court to seek compensation.
There have always been complaints that some basic services provided by companies are poor in some areas. Some floors of buildings experience low-pressure water supply, power problems and patchy internet access. In such cases, some companies sell additional devices to solve the problem.
The MP explained that the reason for proposing the amendment was because water, electricity and sewerage services are provided under a monopoly and there is no proper competition between the two main internet service providers.
The amendment also aims to address the issues of additional difficulties and expenditure on accessing the service in a desirable manner for different parts of the same household.
