The construction of council buildings in 55 islands across the Maldives is set to begin in April, Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef said today.

The project has been awarded to Malaysia’s Hextar Global under contractor financing. A team from Hextar Global is scheduled to arrive in the Maldives on February 28 to address the space constraints faced by the councils.

The buildings will include two-story offices in 39 of the 55 islands, with the project expected to be completed within two and a half years if it proceeds according to the schedule, the Minister said.

Minister Shareef said that a Maldivian representative was appointed to oversee the project, with Hextar Maldives Managing Director Ali Shareef signing the agreement on behalf of the company.

In addition to the 55 council buildings, 50 more council buildings will be constructed with Chinese assistance. A team from China will arrive in April to start the feasibility study, with work scheduled to commence by mid-year.

This year, the government will also develop children’s parks, with 48 parks planned across various islands.

The parks are being built with the assistance of India, two parks under STO’s CSR initiative and seven parks under the ministry’s PSIP budget.

However, no specific start date has been provided for the park construction projects.
