The accused in the run over death of a Bangladeshi man has denied two of the three charges raised against him.

In April last year, a motorcycle and car crashed in the road to the west of the Ooredoo Building in Hulhumale'. In the crash, the two Bangladeshi men on the motorcycle fell on the ground, and the car ran over one of them. Both were severely injured in the accident, with the motorist, who was run over, later succumbing to injuries.

The motorist is identified as Masood Rana, while his passenger was Sheikh Shuaib.

In the case, the State pressed three separate charges against the driver of the car, Mausoom Haleem of Kethi, K. Kaashidhoo. These are negligence causing a death, inflicting injury, and damage to property.

Prosecutor General's Office said that the first two charges were pressed because the car had failed to signal before turning on to the road, at which time an accident occurred with the motorcycle which had been attempting to overtake, causing Masood to fall and become stuck under the car. The car had then reversed over him at high speed, which caused Masood injury, and later, death.

In the hearing at the Criminal Court today, Mausoom rejected the charges of negligence causing death and inflicting injury. His lawyer said cited as a reason that the accident did not occur due to any action on his part, and as such he does not need to bear criminal responsibility for the incident.

The defence claims that the accident did not occur due to the driver's failure to signal a turn, but rather because the motorcycle had attempted to overtake from the wrong side.

PG Office said that the damage to property charges were pressed as another car had been damaged in the accident, but this charge is currently under review. This is because the owner of the second car has notified the PG Office that Mausoom had covered the cost of most of the repairs needed for that car.

The Judge postponed deliberating on this charge to a later date.
