President Muizzu meets with President of the European Commission

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu yesterday has met with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly.

According to the President's Office, the two leaders praised the strong and dynamic relations between the European Union and the Maldives, and expressed a mutual desire to further enhance diplomatic ties.

Presenting his administration's development agenda at the meeting, President Muizzu highlighted key areas which require additional assistance to advance Maldives development.

He added that the 24 percent tariff imposed on Maldivian fish exports to the European Union posed challenges, significantly hindering the country's competitiveness in the EU market.

President Muizzu additionally highlighted the Maldives' efforts in climate adaptation and mitigation.

In response, President of the European Commission reaffirmed the EU’s unwavering support for the Maldives and praised the country's proactive stance on climate change. She also positively acknowledged the Maldives' request for increased assistance in adaptation and mitigation efforts.

President Muizzu is meeting with various global leaders and heads of international organizations during his first official visit to the United States.
