Vice President of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Abdul Salaam, and Member Thoha Mohamed have resigned following a parliamentary committee's decision to dismiss them.

The Parliament’s Committee on Independent Institutions passed a motion recommending the dismissal of several members of the ACC and the Elections Commission (EC) over alleged integrity and disciplinary concerns, including Salaam and Thoha.

However, the two stepped down before the parliament could vote on their dismissal.

In his resignation letter to the President’s Office, Thoha stated that while he had performed his duties freely and honestly in accordance to the Constitution and the law, the allegations and no confidence motion had created an environment that made it impossible for him to continue his work independently.

Salaam confirmed that he had submitted his resignation letter to the President’s Office.

When first announcing the issue of dismissal, Secretary General of the Parliament Fathimath Niusha said that Article 17 (a) of the ACC Act states that in fulfilling the duties of the commission, members must not be swayed by threats or influence. Article 17(b) states that personal interest should not be involved in the resolution of any matter or establishing policies.

The law states that a member can be dismissed if either of these two are articles are contravened, she said then, adding that multiple allegations against Salam and Thoha for acting against these articles were submitted to the Committee on Independent Institutions.
