Maldivian Blood Services has said today that thirteen children have been registered on the Thalassemia Register this year.

Maldivian Blood Services Senior Specialist Registrar in Pediatric Dr Ahmed Umar said that the number of new registers so far this year is higher than that of last year.

Last year saw 10 new registrations, and 2022 saw 16 registrations.

The register has had 944 registrations to date, with 659 currently listed.

In the past thirteen years, 2011 saw the highest number of new registrations, with the number being at 31. Next highest is 2014, with 27 registrations. The least number of registrations was in 2020, with 5 registrations, although the decrease is believed to be due to difficulties in testing during the Covid 19 pandemic.

On average, there are 17 registrations per year according to Maldivian Blood Services statistics.
