Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has placed a ban on two syrups administered to children as a painkiller due to it containing dangerous chemicals.

In an alert issued today, MDFA said that diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol was discovered in two medications used as painkillers found in the Maldives market while a quality screening was being conducted.

The chemical was found in Mefnac Suspension Syrup manufactured by Pakistan's Efroze Chemical Pvt Ltd and Axcel Mefenamic Acid Suspension Syrup produced by Malaysia's Kotra Pharma.

The authority said that they are in the process of sending samples of both medication abroad for further testing. Hence, import, sale and use of any batches of these medications are banned in the meantime.

They also instructed pharmacies and warehouses to store any stock of these medications separate from other products.

Diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol are industrial chemicals. There have been earlier reported cases where 368 children in Indonesia and 70 children in Gambia died through ingesting medication containing these chemicals.
