Some fishermen expressed concerns on social media today, saying they cannot get ice from some ice plants.
According to a MIFCO media official, ice is currently unavailable only at islands where plants are experiencing issues.
They said that at the S. Hulhumeedhoo ice plant, one unit is having drum problems while the second unit is experiencing a gas leak issue.
The official stated that GDh. Gadhdhoo and Thinadhoo ice plants are having condenser pump problems, and engineers are working to resolve issues at both islands.
"Although AFC [Hulhumeedhoo Addu Fisheries Complex] normally supplies ice to fewer vessels, work is ongoing to permanently fix these two issues [Hulhumeedhoo Units 1 and 2]," the MIFCO official said.
The company stated that despite difficulties in ice supply, fish-weighing operations will continue.
MIFCO began providing ice on credit or deferred payment for up to 10 tons to fishing vessels last August. The company said that for vessels buying ice on credit, the ice cost will be deducted from their payment when they weigh their fish.
