Police have said today that they will stop individuals wearing helmets outside areas where their use is mandated by law and regulations.

In a statement issued last night, the police said they would monitor road users wearing helmets in areas where they are not legally required and stop and search individuals deemed suspicious.

“This is a step taken to ensure the safety and security of all citizens and to create a safer environment,” the police said.

The move follows concerns about individuals wearing helmets with the intention of committing crimes in areas where helmets are not required by law. The police noted that such individuals have been seen entering business and service establishments.

Under current regulations, both the driver and passenger of motorcycles must wear helmets in areas where speeds exceed 30 km/h. In the Male' City area, this applies to the Sinamale’ Bridge and the bridge highway.

“Signs indicating the speed limit will be posted in these areas,” the police added.

While the police did not provide specific reasons for the measure, it follows a recent spike in violence in Malé.
