Hassan Latheef, who resigned from his post as President of The Democrats yesterday, has joined main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) today.
Latheef has also served as Chairperson of MDP previously.
Through rifts that rose within MDP in the run up to the 2023 presidential elections, Hassan, alongside other supporters of Nasheed, left the party which was backing then President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and formed The Democrats.
Latheef was amongst the founders of The Democrats. Others who worked with him, including former STO Managing Director Hussain Amru, former MDP Deputy President Mohamed Shifaz, and former MP for Central Henveiru Ali Azim have also now rejoined MDP.
While former leaders of MDP are returning to the party, they are planning a major rally for January 31 under the title 'In defence of the Constitution'.
