Have received complaints of falsified party switching: Elections Commission

Elections Commission (EC) has said that they have received some complaints regarding wrongful switching to political parties.

EC Member Hassan Zakariya stated that they have received such complaints and are currently looking into them.

However, he said that they had not received a high number of such complaints.

"Every now and then, we get a complaint about a person being switched to another political party without their knowledge," he said.

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), meanwhile, has said that they are receiving a high number of complaints that members are becoming victim to falsified party switching, most commonly to the ruling People's National Congress (PNC).

MDP member since 2005, and former Heritage State Minister during MDP's administration, Mohamed Thoriq has also submitted a case to Police claiming he was wrongfully included as a PNC member. A letter he sent to Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau alleging his signature had been forged on the membership form has also been shared on social media.
