In a press conference last night, Police have said that they have found suspected forged documents submitted in the case alleging land being allocated by HDC to persons not on the Binveriya housing scheme recipients list.
Central Investigation Command Head Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdulla Shareef said that police had initiated the investigation to check if the documents were legitimate.
He said that a number of issues had been noted in the lots where recipients are applying via the portal for the relevant documents.
Shareef said that as of now, issues have been found in three separate land plots. In some cases, requests have been submitted via the portal to commence construction. In the case of some of the land plots, requests have been submitted by more than one person.
He said that the documents they have received now were made in the name of the previous Ministry of Housing and Planning, which includes documents dated September 11, 2023.
He said that the discrepancies had come to the notice of HDC when more than one person had applied for permits for the same land plot. At this point, HDC had forwarded the documents to the Housing Ministry to confirm their veracity.
"In the investigation, all have said that these documents were handed over to them by the previous government. I am not saying these are legitimate. We are working on confirming whether it is," Shareef said.
According to Shareef, six persons have now been questioned in relation to the case, which does not include any staff of HDC.
Police further noted that the investigation needs to be broadened beyond the initial stage, stating that they will be investigate if there is involvement of staff of the previous and current Housing Ministry in this matter.
While Police has said this, it came to light earlier this week that HDC Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed's brother, MWSC Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed has been wrongly awarded a land plot. Similar registries had been issued to a number of other persons as well.
