Labour Relations Authority (LRA) has today appealed to all employers to pay Ramadan Allowance in accordance with the Employment Act.

The announcement by LRA states that the Employment Act stipulates that every Maldivian employee is entitled to a Ramadan allowance of MVR 3000, payable before the beginning of Ramadan.

They called for the allowance to be paid to those working both in the private and public sectors, and added that those in temporary employment, probation and legally entitled leaves are also entitled to the allowance.

They noted that they had received complaints about local employees failing to receive the allowance as per the law in previous years.

As per the calendar, Ramadan this year will commence on March 1.

The law states that those whose salaries and allowances are determined by parliament are also entitled to this allowance.

In the case of government employees who work in more than one job, the allowance will be provided via their primary employer.

The Finance Ministry, meanwhile, has instructed for the allowance to be withheld from those on pay leave and no pay leave at the start of Ramadan.

The ministry has also instructed Ramadan Allowance to be paid before coming Friday, February 21.
