Male' City Mayor Adam Azim has said that all finishing work related to Aa Sahara Cemetery will be completed by August at the latest, and it will be operational thereafter.

During a press conference held at Male' City Council this morning, Azim stated that the pace of work on Aa Sahara Cemetery has been accelerated, with completion expected by August at the latest, based upon the speed of ongoing work.

The Mayor said that renovations of Aa Sahara had been delayed due to changes in drawings and issues with contractors. However, he assured that these issues have now been resolved.

Renovation work ongoing at Aa Sahara cemetery.

The renovation of the cemetery was carried out in two parts, which includes the structural work and the finishing work, which were handled separately. Initially, the structural work was contracted to PNP Maldives Private Limited for MVR 4.9 million (USD 232,897.97). However, despite being assigned a one-month timeframe, the project experienced significant delays and remained unfinished. Although the City Council annulled the agreement, the company has retained an advance payment of MVR 3.6 million (USD 232,897.97).

Following this, B-Six Investments was newly hired last December to complete the structure of the building with an investment of MVR 4.6 million (USD 297,591.85). The company has successfully completed the construction they were tasked with.

Male' City Council had contracted Haiman Constructions to complete all remaining finishing work of Aa Sahara cemetery, funded with MVR 2.7 million (USD 174,673.48).

"While the finishing work is ongoing, the contractor is undertaking some of the tasks at their own expense. There are several improvements needed for the existing mosque at the cemetery, including resolving water leakage issues," Azim said.

"The current contractor, Haiman, has committed to completing such works at their own expense. We are very thankful for that," Azim said.

The renovation of the Aa Sahara cemetery, which includes the construction of a two-storey building, was initiated in June last year to expand space and accommodate visitors more effectively.
