Maldives is set to introduce bio metric national identity cards, national centre for information technology (NCIT) said Sunday.
NCIT chief Mohamed Ashmalee said USD15 million is needed to establish an integrated e-government system to introduce bio-metric identity cards.
According to Ashmalee, the bio-metric ID cards would enable the public to get services under one roof.
The bio-metric verification system would save the public a lot of time to obtain information available in various ministries.
"We would then be able to ensure secure information and it would be more reliable," he added.
Maldives had recently introduced a bio-metric passport with 34 different security features.
NCIT has sought the required funds from the government and Ashmalee assured that bio-metric ID cards would be made available within four months after the funds are arranged.
