Elections Commission (EC) has announced that ruling party People's National Congress (PNC) will receive the largest portion of the MVR 27 million allocated in this year's budget for political parties.
In a post on X, EC stated that MVR 27,981,256 has been allocated for political parties that had at least 10,000 members by the end of last year.
Five parties will receive this funding.
EC has also published details of how the funds will be distributed among the parties.
PNC, which will receive the largest amount this year, has been allocated MVR 13.3 million by the Elections Commission. This is because the party had 68,968 members by the end of last year, according to the commission.
While PNC will receive the most funding for a single party, opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which previously received the largest amount, has been allocated MVR 8.4 million this year. The party had 43,755 members at the end of last year.
Funding amounts for parties:
- PNC - MVR 13.3 million
- MDP - MVR 8.4 million
- Jumhooree Party - MVR 2.6 million
- Adhaalath Party - MVR 1.7 million
- Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) - MVR 1.7 million
EC has not yet announced when these funds will be disbursed.
Previously, funding for political parties was between 0.1 percent and 0.2 percent of the total national budget. However, after the Parliament amended the law last year, the amount has been changed to between 0.1 percent and 0.2 percent of the estimated revenue for that year.
Last year, a total of six political parties received MVR 44 million from the allocated budget.
