While Aiham was arrested under a court order, he tried to smuggle cigarettes out of the duty free on Friday evening last week.
A Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) officer was arrested on Wednesday for smuggling cigarettes from a duty-free shop at Velana International Airport.
Police said that Mohamed Aiham, 23, was arrest in connection with the incident.
While Aiham was arrested under a court order, he tried to smuggle cigarettes out of the duty free on Friday evening last week.
Aiham was taken to court for a decision on his remand and a 10-day remand order was issued.
It is learned that Aiham is an officer on duty at the Velana International Airport.
In addition, two people, including a police officer, were arrested on Tuesday for smuggling cartons of cigarettes without permission from the departure terminal of Velana International Airport. However, they were released on bail on Thursday.
Yoosuf Nazeer, 38, a police officer, and Ahmed Afzal, 45, an MACL employee, were arrested in the case.
Police said the officer, Yoosuf Nazeer, has been suspended without pay and his case being investigated by boards set up within the police.
Customs on Tuesday filed a complaint with police about the discovery of cigarette cartons in trash bags being smuggled out of the airport's departure terminal.
