Communications Director at the Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture Ahmed Fazeel was suspended on Monday over numerous allegations of sexual harassment.
Spokesperson for the President's Office Ibrahim Hood confirmed the suspension through his official Twitter account. He assured that the "serious" allegations were currently under investigation.
Appointed to his position on a slot allotted to the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), Fazeel stands accused of inappropriately touching minors and sharing pornographic material.
On Sunday, former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's MRM formally requested President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to suspend Fazeel from his duties at the fisheries ministry.
MRM also announced that Fazeel was suspended from party activities until the conclusion of an internal investigation concerning the accusations.
Recently, several allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse have surfaced concerning men serving in prominent state or institutional positions.
Public ire continues to increase over the government's meagre record of arresting and convicting perpetrators of sexual offences despite several promises to support the rights of children and women.
