Some local cat protection organizations estimate that there are over 3,000 stray cats roaming the streets of Male’.
Ministry of Animal Welfare has reported that 15 additional cats were rescued and taken to Olhu Hiyaa facility during Eid holidays.
The ministry in a post of social media platform X, said that efforts are ongoing to improve the facility, including enhancing cat kennels and acquiring new equipment to care for the growing number of rescued cats.
With the latest additions, the Olhu Hiyaa facility now houses a total of 30 cats.

“These newly rescued cats, along with the first batch, are receiving the care and protection they need. We are gradually acquiring the necessary materials to expand our operations, and in the coming days, we plan to bring in more stray cats,” the ministry said.

The Olhu Hiyaa facility, located in Hulhumale’, opened in February last year.
Initially established by the Male’ City Council to remove and care for stray cats in the capital, the facility was later transferred to the Ministry of Animal Welfare following a cabinet decision. Despite some initial disputes between Male' City Council and the ministry, the facility is now fully operated by the ministry.
Currently, the facility employs four staff members, including a veterinarian and three administrative workers, with additional help provided by nurses and volunteers.
