The two assailants who attacked Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem were following him from the early hours of this morning, it has been learned.
A statement released by the PG Office said that Shameem was attacked by two individuals on a motorcycle with the use of a weapon.
Mihaaru News has reported that the two individuals were stalking Shameem since he left the house at dawn this morning for his regular jog.
Although at times he has security accompanying him, Shameem often goes out to jog or swim for exercise by himself.
Information gathered so far in the investigation indicates that the two individuals followed Shameem as he jogged on the streets of Male' early this morning.
The two people were attempting to conceal their identity by wearing helmets.
After Shameem finished his exercise routine, he returned home. He then left the house again to drop off his child at school.
Shameem was attacked in front of his home near Noor Mosque while he was returning home after the school drop off.
The attackers attempted to hit Shameem on the head with a hammer, however Shameem managed to take defensive action, resulting in him sustaining injuries to his left forearm instead.
Police told AFP that they suspected a link to criminal prosecutions Shameem had handled.
PG Office has confirmed that he is receiving treatment for his injuries, including fractured bones, at ADK Hospital. They confirmed that he is in a stable condition.
Following the attack, MNDF has decided to further strengthen the security detail allocated to the PG.
PG Office said that the Commissioner of Police Ali Sujau visited Shameem in hospital to check on his condition.
They further revealed that the police are considering this as a serious offence, and are conducting investigations.
