STELCO issued two electricity bills to include the government's Ramadan discount for customers, the company's Managing Director, Hussain Fahmy, said last night.

Last month, STELCO first sent out electricity bills for January, covering a 32-day period from January 9 to February 10. A second bill was then issued for February 10 to 27.

The issuance of two bills in one month has sparked public concern.

In a post on X, Fahmy said the move was intended to benefit customers.

"It is not a single-usage bill. The dates of the bill readings will be visible on the bill. This is to clear the backlog of 20 to 25 days in bill delivery from the previous STELCO billing cycle," he said.

"Customers have also been given 30 days to pay without penalty to ease any financial burden."

He said the change was made to ensure the entire Ramadan electricity usage from the first day to the last was included in a single bill, allowing customers to receive the full discount.

“If the bill was issued as usual, only part of the Ramadan usage would be eligible for the discount,” he said.

“With the backlog cleared, customers will be able to compare the readings with their meters and have more confidence in STELCO, as readings will be taken in the last week of the month and bills delivered the next day.”

Fahmy said STELCO, which has been in national service for 75 years, would never act with the intention of misleading the public.

To facilitate the change, 350 STELCO employees carried out all electricity bill readings in a single day.

President Mohamed Muizzu has decided to give a 10 percent discount on electricity bills during Ramadan. A similar discount was given last year.
