Passport and ID card services are already available on some other islands across some atolls.
Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan said that today is a historic day because President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assured the people that services will be available wherever they are.
"It is a presidential pledge that ID cards will be printed and issued from all the atolls of the country, and in addition, passports will be issued," he said.
Ihusaan added that the ID card contains important information about the people, and the database is maintained very securely.
The minister said the biggest challenge is establishing a system to maintain secure documents, such as ID cards and passports, in accordance with international standards.
Minister Ihusaan said that he believed that other governments have not been able to achieve this due to similar challenges, but the President's vision has paved the way for the ministry to ensure security and safety.
"Hence, the department in charge of making our ID cards, the Department of National Registration, will process the application from any part of the country, and printing can be done once authorized, as the atolls are only given the option to print the authorized ID cards," Ihusaan said.
Minister Ihusaan added that this measure was taken to protect the information and prevent unauthorized cards from being printed. This is a confirmation of the President's vision to provide services with modern technology, he said.
