An emergency motion submitted to parliament today calling to disclose the total number of political appointees in this government has been rejected.

The emergency motion was submitted by South Galolhu MP Meekail Ibrahim Naseem. It stated that while a decision has been made to decrease the pay of political appointees, the actual number of appointees remain undisclosed to date.

The emergency motion called to reveal the numbers and designations of all political appointees.

The motion was rejected through the votes of 50 MPs. Only eight MPs voted in favour.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced yesterday that in order to reduce State expenditures, salaries of leaders of the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary, senior members of independent institutions, parliament members and leaders of SOEs will be decreased by 10 percent.

Prior to this, the President also announced that 228 political appointees will be dismissed.

Today's parliamentary sitting was held for the proposal of the supplementary budget and to conduct budget related work.

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party submitted this emergency motion at this sitting, but all ministries except for four have already disclosed the number of political appointees at their offices.

Information received by 16 offices, including the President's Office, indicates that by the end of July, there were 1249 political appointees.
