Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom) has announced an investigation into a TV program where derogatory remarks were made about autistic individuals.
The controversial remarks were made during Raajje TV's political talk show "Kalaabaisa" on Monday night, featuring former Colonel Ahmed Fayaz Ali (Papa Fayaz) and former Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed Abdulla.
The program criticized President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, likening his actions to those of an autistic person, a comment that has sparked widespread backlash.
In a circular, the commission stated that the content violated broadcasting guidelines and Article 35 of the Constitution, which ensures special protection for children, young people, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.
It reaffirmed its authority to investigate and take corrective measures against such violations, promising strict action under the law.
The commission also urged the public to uphold constitutional values and laws, emphasizing the importance of respecting individuals with autism and Down syndrome.
Many have condemned Nasheed's encouragement of the remarks, expressing outrage on social media.
