MDP and The Democrats request an extraordinary sitting of the parliament to decide on the mandates of the government ministries.
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats have said today that they have sent in a request to the Parliament Secretariat to hold an extraordinary sitting before the last session of the 19th People's Majlis commenced on February 5.
The reason for the request is to approve the mandates of the government ministries before the law is amended to disallow elections in Ramadan, or before the cabinet is given parliamentary approval.
The parliament election is currently scheduled to be held on March 17, during Ramadan.
Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), part of the ruling coalition, has said today that the date of the election can still be changed, indicating they will support such efforts.
An amendment has now been proposed to the parliament by the ruling coalition to disallow holding elections during the month of Ramadan.
