MACL, which manages Velana International Airport (VIA), said that arrivals yesterday have been recorded at 10,297. This is the third highest number of arrivals in a day recorded by the airport.
Statistics kept by MACL shows that the highest number of arrivals was recorded on February 10 this year, with the number at 11,207.
Velana International Airport sees a spike in arrivals each February.
The second highest number of arrivals was recorded on February 11 this year, with 10,775 arrivals recorded.
On eight separate days this year, the airport has recorded over 10,000 arrivals.
From last Friday to the end of Sunday as well the number of arrivals have been significantly high, with each day seeing over 10,000 arrivals.
In addition to this, many locals are also travelling domestically and internationally as the school holidays also fall within this period. As there are four public holidays around new year, travelling is expected to increase then as well.
This year also marked the highest number of tourist arrivals in the history of Maldives tourism, with the number now exceeding two million.
