China signed an agreement with Maldives on Wednesday to assist the country in advancing its ophthalmic services.
Minister of Health Abdulla Amin signed the agreement on behalf of Maldives whereas China was represented in the ceremony by Chinese Resident Ambassador to Maldives Zhang Lhizong.
Under the terms of the agreement, a special ophthalmic facility would be established at the Hulhumale' Hospital, where new services will be introduced in efforts to expand ophthalmic care.
Ministry of Health revealed that ophthalmic services ranging from the most common eye care procedures to specialized surgeries at Hulhumale' Hospital will be enhanced and improved.
Chinese government has agreed to provide Hulhumale' Hospital with ophthalmic equipment under the contract.
Further, Chinese ophthalmologists would be employed at the hospital, and local doctors and nurses would receive special training.
Maldives had conducted special eye care camps in the country in 2015 and 2017 with the aid of the Chinese government. More than 1,000 people were screened and 186 individuals received cataract surgery. Maldives also received ophthalmic instruments worth MVR 9.2 million from China.
