Parliament's Human Rights Committee has approved the appointment of former Vice President of Elections Commission Ismail Habeeb as a member of the Human Rights Commission.
The nomination of Habeeb was sent to Parliament on July 15 by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The Human Rights Committee conducted research on the nomination and summoned Habeeb for an interview yesterday.
Today, in a committee meeting to decide on the matter, Chair Fathimath Saudha, MP for Nilandhoo constituency, said that members had awarded on overage over 75 percent for Habeeb.
Hence, the committee announced that Habeeb is qualified to serve as a member of HRCM, and proposed his appointment to the post through the unanimous votes of all members in attendance.
A vote on Habeeb's appointment is expected to be conducted in the Parliament chambers during next week.
