President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that it is one of the highest priorities of the government to transform Maldives into a drug-free environment.

The President made these comments in a post on social media X after authorities seized 468 kg of illicit drugs from a Sri Lankan vessel that was illegally in Maldivian waters.

He recognized the work of law enforcement towards this goal and extended thanks.

In a press conference held yesterday afternoon, Police Commissioner Ali Sujau said that the fishing vessel had been intercepted by MNDF Coast Guard outside Haa Dhaalu atoll Makunudhoo at around 00:45 hrs on Sunday.

The operation was conducted based on intelligence reports received by MNDF.

When intercepted, there were five Sri Lankan men on the boat.

The boat has now been taken to the Haa Dhaalu atoll Kulhudhuhfushi harbour by Coast Guard and Police.

A search of the boat conducted by Kulhudhuhfushi Police resulted in the discovery of 468.6 kg of suspected drugs. Initial testing of the substances indicate they contain 344 kgs of methamphetamine and 124.6 kg of cocaine.

Commissioner Shujau announced that the street price of these drugs reach MVR 1 billion.
