A 19 year old Maldivian man arrested for involvement in scams has told the Criminal Court that he lacks literacy in the local language, Dhivehi, and so was provided a translator during his remand hearing.

The man was arrested on January 13 and was initially placed in remand in custody for a period of 7 days. At the end of this period, his remand was extended by another 15 days yesterday.

The defence has claimed in Court that as the accused lacks Dhivehi literacy, it proves that he cannot have been involved in the crimes he is being charged with.

Police said that large amounts of funds which are the proceeds of scams have been deposited in the accused's bank account. They further said that he had then transferred these funds to other individuals. Police said that the accused had been in possession of his cash card as well.

The defendant said in court that he does not know the other people involved in the case. He claims that he had been coerced under threat to commit the acts. He said that he had not reported these threats to Police as he had been warned that he would be killed if he did so.
