COVID-19: High Commission sends 'care packages' to Indian patients in Maldives

The Indian High Commission confirmed the sending of 'care packages', to Indian expatriate workers that have tested positive for COVID-19 in Maldives.

By April 26, a total of 10 Indian nationals have tested positive for the virus and are receiving treatment at quarantine facilities.

Deputy High Commissioner to Maldives Shri Rohit Rathish stated that, thus far, 'care packages' have been delivered to six out of the ten individuals, adding that the other four will receive their packages shortly.

"We are delivering these packages to encourage those who test positive for the disease and to assure them the Indian government supports them", he said.

According to Rohit, the packages contain necessary everyday items in addition to various types of snacks.

Rohit added that the High Commission was advising Indian national living in Maldives to comply with the government's orders and information given by health experts.

"In this holy month, we are praying that we emerge from this pandemic soon", Rohit said.

Maldives now records 214 positive, two probable and 198 active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 16 recoveries.

The latest developments show that 117 of the positive cases are expatriate workers, including 102 Bangladesh nationals, 13 Indian nationals and two Sri Lankan nationals.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 3 million people and claimed over 207,008 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 881,510 people have recovered.
