Football Association of Maldives (FAM)'s normalisation committee and the delegation from FIFA which is currently in Maldives today met with Prosecutor General (PG) Abbas Shareef.

The meeting was held at the request of the Normalization Committee set up to stabilise the affairs of the Maldivian Football scene. During the meeting PG Abbas shared the latest updates on the case of the FAM's former management embezzling large amounts of funds from the association. They also discussed the steps to be taken to recover the money and property lost to the FAM.

FAM also shared with PG the difficulties they are facing in their efforts to re-stabilise the association's affairs while the criminal investigation into the former leadership of FAM continues.

Abbas, who took office last week, assured he would work with investigative agencies to resolve the issues. Abbas also urged the normalisation committee to shape its work to prevent such incidents from happening again within the FAM.

In connection with the criminal investigation against former FAM officials, the FAM shared with the prosecutor the difficulties it is facing in its efforts to restore normalcy.

Abbas, who took office last week, said he would work with investigative agencies to resolve the issues. Abbas asked the normalization committee to shape its work to prevent such incidents from happening again within the FAM.

Police began investigating the FAM-related fraud cases following an order issued by former Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem.

Former FAM president Bassam Adeel Jaleel was charged by the PG Office earlier this year after he was discovered to have deposited USD10,000 into his own account - money that belonged to FAM.

Last week, however, Police also concluded their investigation into allegations that Bassam used FIFA loaned money, originally intended to alleviate the financial hardship of local football clubs, to purchase two apartments from Amin Avenue. The agency has also requested PG office to press charges in the matter.
