The party has no issues with members who decided to leave and join Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), said The Democrats today in a press conference, assuring that the party would not fail despite this.

This comes after multiple members who left MDP initially to form The Democrats, left the party to re-join MDP yesterday.

They include President of the Democrats Hassan Latheef, Vice President Mohamed Shifaz, former Managing Director of STO Hussain Amr and the party's former Parliamentary Group Leader Ali Azim.

Speaking at the press conference, The Democrats' Vice President Hussain Firshan said the party has no problems with the defectors. He also said that he does not believe that there would be issues in the future either.

However, he said there may be differences in political opinion as it is a political matter.

Former Ungoofaaru MP Mohamed Waheed (Wadde) also spoke on the matter. He said that the members who left the party made their own political decision, and that he does not believe this situation would fail the party.

"[We] don't believe that the party would fail at all. The party is a young, small party. [We] see it very bright [future] from ahead, Wadde said.

When asked whether the members who left the party consulted former President and Speaker Mohamed Nasheed who founded the party, Wadde said he was not aware of any such discussions.

Former north Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahumy (Inthi) also said that the party will continue to strengthen in the future. As such, they are working to increase membership and hosting activities, he said.
