Health Protection Agency (HPA) has decided to administer second booster shot of the Covid-19 vaccine to senior citizens.

This would make it the fourth dose of the Covid vaccine they would receive.

In a press release by the agency on Wednesday, they said people over the age of 65, and high risk individuals, will receive a fourth dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. The shot will be administered after four months had passed since they received the third dose.

People qualified for the fourth dose

- People above the age of 65

- Immunocompromised people between the ages of 18-64

- People that have had organ transplants

- People that take medication that may suppress their immune system

- People getting treatment for cancer, and cancer survivors one year into their recovery

- People with pulmonary conditions

HPA said these people will receive the Pfizer vaccine starting June 23.

Hulhumale' Hospital will administer vaccines from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Dharumavantha Hospital will administer vaccines on the same days between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 a.m. starting June 26. Dhamanaveshi will administer vaccines every government working day between 1:00 p.pm. and 3:00 p.m..

Children between the ages 12-17 that had received two doses of the vaccine can now get their booster shot as well. The booster shot will be administered six months after the second dose.

HPA said people that qualify for the vaccine can register for an appointment via mv.gov.hpa.book, as the vaccinations are administered via appointments in the Male' area. The hospitals or health centers of the administrative islands will announce how the vaccination program will be rolled out on the island.

The fourth doses for senior citizens were announced when the Covid cases are once again on the raise in Maldives. Even though HPA has not revived the mask mandate, they urge all citizens to wear masks in public spaces, and take other precautionary measures as well.
