Authorities have been informed, but as of now, no response teams have arrived at the site, Nasih said.
A fuel barge of state owned company FSM has run aground on the reef of Gaafu Alifu atoll Nilandhoo.
Nilandhoo Council President Ibrahim Nasih told Mihaaru News that the barge grounded on the northwest side of Nilandhoo early this morning.
Nasih said investigations are underway to determine if the barge, which was carrying fuel, sustained any damage or leaks.
"The ship was carrying fuel, so we are assessing whether it has been damaged or not," he said.
He noted that the barge heavily grounded on the reef, making it difficult to refloat. Work to refloat the vessel have not yet begun, he added.
Authorities have been informed, but as of now, no response teams have arrived at the site, Nasih said.
FSM has not yet issued a statement regarding the incident.
