Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) has opposed the Elections Commission’s (EC) decision to dissolve the party and called the decision unlawful.

EC decided to dissolve MRM on January 29, after the party's failure to meet the 3,000 member threshold required for political parties, after the deadline to meet this requirement had passed.

However, MRM has rejected the decision and sent a letter to the commission stating that the dissolution of the party violates the constitution.

In a letter signed by MRM President Ahmed Faris Maumoon, the party said that EC had acted against MRM in violation of the law and court orders.

"The parliament committee report highlights that EC Vice-President Ali Nashath, Commission Member Mohamed Asif, and Commission Member Dr Mohamed Zahir attempted to manipulate membership forms to prevent MRM from reaching the required membership threshold."

MRM has called for action against these members and their removal from their posts.

The party had previously filed a civil suit challenging an earlier decision to dissolve the party as well. Civil Court had then ruled that EC's decision to dissolve MRM was issued in violation of the Political Parties Act.
