Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM) has announced it will be endorsing Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for the upcoming presidential election on September 9.
According to TEAM’s press statement, the rights of tourism industry employees were best preserved under president Solih’s administration unlike preceding governments.
TEAM further said that President Solih's government had carried out several initiatives in collaboration with international bodies to preserve the rights of tourism industry professionals, introduced a minimum wage, and harmonized their pay. The association also highlighted the current government's decision to set tourist resort service charges at a minimum of 10 percent of the resort's earnings and introduced a proper system to monitor the implementation of this policy.
The association also emphasized current government’s decision to amend the laws to ensure stronger protection of employees’ rights including unjust termination. TEAM highlighted the current government’s decision to shift academic break to allow tourism industry workers to visit their families.
TEAM further said it decided to back president Solih, who is seeking re-election, following his pledge to introduce social housing scheme exclusively for tourism industry employees. The association believes Solih’s government will benefit tourism industry professionals the most in the next five years as well.
