Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, Adam Shareef, said that 36 islands, which missed out on decorative lights during last year's Eid, will be receiving them this year, at an estimated cost of MVR 28 million.
The lights will be part of the celebrations for Eid, following the tradition that started when President Dr Mohamed Muizzu was the Mayor of Male' City. In previous years, Male', Hulhumale', and Vilimale' were among the areas illuminated with decorative lights.
Speaking at a press conference at the President's Office, Minister Shareef highlighted that this year, the government is working to bring lights to 36 additional islands, with the total expenditure expected to reach MVR 28 million.
The minister said that while it may seem costly, the lights would serve as a long-term investment and would be reused for future events.
The lights will feature Islamic slogans and the recitation of Takbeer, reflecting the priority given by President Muizzu to protect and promote the Islamic legacy.
Minister Shareef said that the lights are not only for Eid but islands have used these lights for other special occasions, such as Independence Day and National Day.
This initiative aims to bring joy to the people, acknowledging their love for beauty and the significance of celebrating Eid with pride and unity.
