Fayyaz stated that this is the first time a government failed to prepare for the electricity issues that habitually come up in islands during Ramadan every year.
Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has said that new ideas, such as creating an electricity grid incorporating renewable energy and other inventions, must be embraced in order to bring about a resolution to the issues faced in provision of electricity.
Fayyaz stated that this is the first time a government failed to prepare for the electricity issues that habitually come up in islands during Ramadan every year.
Fayyaz's comments come in the wake of Addu City facing continued power cuts for over six months, including within this month of Ramadan. Addu residents have been raising concerns of the power cuts they have to endure daily, with some mosques on the islands also being in the dark even during Taraweeh prayers.
Fayyaz alleged that it is a deliberate move on the part of the government to take away a fundamental right of the people in the second largest city of the country, maintaining that the government's pledges to resolve the issue lacks sincerity.
He claims that prior planning would have prevented the immense loss and inconvenience being faced by Addu residents.
Now, he said, the path to take would be to embrace new ideas in order to resolve the longstanding issue.
As such, new ways need to be introduced to manage electricity supply, for which the energy related policies and regulations need to be taken into reconsideration.
Former MP for Hithadhoo constituency Mohamed Aslam also shared a post on X stating that Fenaka does not have the capacity to resolve the issue of powercuts in Addu. He called on the State to transfer the responsibliity of providing electricity in Addu to STELCO instead.
Fenaka, meanwhile, has previously said that the powercuts are the result of lack of maintenance of generators during the previous administration led by MDP.
