This is an Op-Ed by Ms. He Fen, Charge d'Affaires a.i. of the Chinese Embassy in the Maldives.
Recently, the US has suggested a plan to “take control” of and “own” Gaza, and relocate local Palestinians to other countries, arousing widespread condemnation across the international community.
Many argue that such actions blatantly violate international law, disregard the rights of the Palestinian people, and could severely undermine regional peace and stability.
The idea of “Clean Out” Gaza will only escalate tensions in the Middle East. Gaza is the homeland of the Palestinian people and an inseparable part of Palestinian territory. It is not a bargaining chip in political negotiations, nor should it become a victim of the law of the jungle.
The United Nations has stated that since the outbreak of the latest round of Israeli-Palestinian conflict, nearly 50,000 people in Gaza have lost their lives, with 70 percent of them being women and children.
At this moment, the international community, especially major powers, should work together to provide humanitarian aid and support for reconstruction in Gaza, rather than adding insult to injury. The call to “Clean Out” Gaza has quickly been met with international condemnation.
Arab countries have expressed opposition to the expulsion of Palestinians or encouraging their relocation from their land in any form or under any pretext. Many European countries have explicitly opposed the U.S. statements, and even within the US, some voices have argued that “Clean Out” Gaza “is simply ethnic cleansing by another name”, “puts the final nail in the coffin of international law” and “reopens a geopolitical Pandora’s box”.
The two-State solution is the only way to resolve the Middle East issue. The Palestinian question lies at the heart of the Middle East issue. It is a matter of international fairness and justice. Under the influence of certain countries with ulterior motives, the Israeli-Palestinian issue has almost become a vicious cycle, with hatred continuously escalating, its impact expanding, and causing severe repercussions for both the Middle East region and the international community.
According to relevant UN Security Council resolutions and international consensus, the fundamental way to the Palestinian question is the implementation of the two-State solution, which involves restoring the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people, establishing an independent Palestinian state enjoying full sovereignty on the basis of the 1967 border with East Jerusalem as its capital, and ensuring the right of the Palestinian people to statehood, their right to existence and their right of return. Any arrangements for Gaza’s future must respect the will and autonomous choices of the Palestinian people and cannot be imposed upon them.
China has always steadfastly supported the just cause of the Palestinian people. China has always been a staunch supporter of the Palestinian people to restore their legitimate national rights, and has always supported all Palestinian factions in strengthening unity and implementing the Beijing Declaration on Ending Division and Strengthening Palestinian National Unity to realize internal reconciliation.
China firmly supports Palestine in becoming a full UN member and supports the convening of a more broad-based, authoritative and effective international peace conference. I noticed that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu strongly defended the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people during the Presidential Address.
China is willing to work with the international community, including the Maldives, to promote an end to the fighting and the killing, and bring the Palestinian question back onto the right track of the two-State solution, with a view to achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting solution at an early date.
2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the world anti-fascist war and the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. The voices of the world’s people against oppression, yearning for peace, and defending fairness and justice are growing stronger. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a responsible major power, China will always stand on the side of peace and human conscience on the Palestinian question, and will continue to promote the implementation of the two-State solution, facilitate lasting peace and stability in the region, and make new and greater contributions to the cause of world peace and progress.
