A circular sent to island councils, signed by Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, urges those who employ foreigners, or conduct tourist activities, to act in accordance with the laws and regulations, and to instruct the foreigners to do so as well.
As per the Religious Unity Regulations, it is the responsibility of those who bring foreigners to Maldives to instruct and ensure they abide by these laws, the Ministry said.
As per this regulation, non-muslims living in and visiting Maldives cannot hold public religious activities, or involve any Maldivians in any such activity.
The Islamic Ministry said that it is strictly prohibited to conduct any religious activities of any religion besides Islam in any public spaces in Maldives.
The ministry called on islands with guesthouses to comply with these regulations, and to instruct tourists to dress in ways that align with general social norms.
