Parliament’s Judiciary Committee has approved the appointment of High Court Justice Hussain Shaheed to the Supreme Court.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu forwarded Shaheed’s name to Parliament following a recommendation by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

JSC had shortlisted Shaheed alongside former Deputy Prosecutor General Mariyam Nihayath and lawyer Rusdullah Ibrahim but ultimately advised the President to nominate Shaheed.

During today’s committee meeting, Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid stated that Justice Shaheed had already been interviewed and reviewed by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), so no further review was necessary. He then moved to vote on the nomination without delay.

All committee members present, including Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir, voted in favor of the nomination.

Parliament is expected to make a final decision on Shaheed’s appointment tomorrow. If approved, he will be formally appointed as a Supreme Court judge.

Shaheed was appointed as a High Court judge on July 24 and later became Chief Judge of the High Court on October 26. His judicial career includes previous roles as a legal officer at the Criminal Court, a Feydhoo Magistrate, and a Criminal Court judge.

Currently, the Supreme Court bench consists of Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan, Dr Azmiralda Zahir, Aisha Shujoon Mohamed, Mahaz Ali Zahir, Ali Rasheed Hussain, and Dr Mohamed Ibrahim.

Judges Azmiralda and Mahaz remain suspended by JSC investigation following a case submitted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
