The nets installed at Olhuhiya (cat shelter) built in Hulhumale have begun to be replaced and repaired within a month after the facility began operations.

Cats were transferred to the shelter on February 28, three months after its opening.

In a post on X, the Animal Welfare Ministry stated that they are currently working on redesigning the cat enclosures and replacing the nets to further improve the facility.

The ministry also said that once the work is completed, it will be able to care for kittens with additional safety measures.

It is unknown how much the cost will be for replacing the nets at the facility.

Male' City Council established a dedicated center to manage stray cats in the Male' region. However, while preparations were underway to relocate the cats, the Cabinet decided to transfer responsibility of the shelter to the Animal Welfare Ministry, which delayed the opening of Olhuhiya.

When the City Council began transferring stray cats to Olhuhiya, the Ministry of Animal Affairs ordered an immediate halt to the operation, stating that the facility did not have all the necessary services to care for the strays.

Later, the facility and its equipment were transferred under the Animal Welfare Ministry.

The Ministry also stated that within 16 hours of officially taking over the Olhuhiya facility, they acquired the resources needed for the new quarantine area and completed all requirements.

Currently, the facility operates with a team of four staff members, including a specialized veterinarian and three administrative personnel. Volunteers will assist as nurses and provide additional support.

Male' City Council had previously announced plans to house and care for 2,000 to 3,000 stray cats from Male' at the facility following their removal from the streets.
