Superintendent of Police Aarif, head of the newly established gang crime prevention unit, told Mihaaru News that certain groups use cafe's to hide drugs and sharp weapons.
Police have conducted raids on such establishments, successfully stopping the supply of weapons, but drug trafficking remains a concern., he said.
“When we searched them, we found alcohol, drugs, and sharp weapons inside cafe's; on their bodies, under tables, even hidden in kitchens,” Aarif said.
Police monitor cafe's where known criminal groups gather for extended periods. If suspicious activity is detected, searches are conducted with the owner's permission or under a court order.
Authorities also highlighted that some cafe's, especially shisha lounges, are more susceptible to crime due to their dimmed private booths which can be used to facilitate criminal activity.
