Police said that they had received reports of an individual entering the transformer near Hiyaa Tower 13 and attempting to steal from it at around 05:30 hrs this morning.

A 32 yar old Maldivian man has been placed under arrest, Police said.
As seen in a video circulating on social media, the man is inside the transformer, holding the door from inside when STELCO staff and Police arrive at the location. Two STELCO employees pull the door open by force and pull the man out.
Even previously, there have been cases where thieves force open STELCO substations, turn off transformers and steal parts.
On March 3, one such man attempting to steal from a transformer had died through electrocution.
Entering these transformers are highly dangerous, with voltages of 11,000v.
